Implant Secured Dentures in York

If you suffer from loose or unstable dentures, a solution can be provided to consider securing these in place with dental implant treatment.

Implant Secured Overdentures offer

  • A secure and comfortable fit of the denture on the gums, so no more denture pressure sores
  • Less denture base coverage, so increased taste
  • A stronger biting force, restoring chewing ability with greater enjoyment of food
  • Increased confidence to eat, laugh, talk and socialise
  • Reduced bone loss, maintaining facial structure and improving your appearance
  • The most cost-effective solution to securely replace all your teeth.

Dental implants can transform the way a denture feels and functions, giving it much greater security and stability throughout the day. Small, discreet attachments connect the denture to the implants, helping it stay firmly in place when eating, speaking and smiling.

In some cases, an existing denture can be carefully adapted to work with the implant attachments. In others, a new bespoke denture may be recommended so that the fit, appearance and position of the attachments can be planned together for the best result.

Two Options for Securing the Denture

There are two ways to stabilise a loose denture. One is with implant locators, which are like “press studs” in the gums, and the denture clips onto them securely. The second option is an implant-retained bar, which is more sturdy. If you would prefer never to have a denture again, then you could have an implant bridge, which stays in position permanently and doesn’t need to be taken out to clean, as a denture does.

3D CT Scan

A 3D CT scan will normally be taken to assess your bone levels and allow precise planning of your treatment. It is gold standard practice to provide a CT scan for implants, so that the position of your nerves and blood vessels can be precisely assessed for safe surgery.

3

Planning the Aesthetics

During treatment planning, each tooth in your smile will be assessed in relation to each other, and in reality on to the proposed new implant denture. It will be discussed whether you are happy with the present colour of your teeth, or whether you would like to plan to whiten the remaining teeth prior to choosing the final restoration colour.

The Implant Placement Process

1

Implant Surgery

Several dental implants can be fitted in 1-2 hours under local anaesthetic, normally under sedation.  A temporary denture is normally fitted immediately so you can continue life as normal.  You may need painkillers after surgery. The implants will integrate naturally with your existing bone, making it strong and secure.

2

Healing

The gum is then normally allowed to heal for up to 12 weeks. During this time, the bone integrates with the implants. If the implants were ‘loaded’ before healing, then the implants have a risk of failure. After this time, detailed records are taken and the locators or implant bar are fitted.

3

Fitting the Implant Denture

If you are having a new denture, then the colour and shape of your new teeth chosen and the bite checked. This information is sent our highly experienced prosthetic technician who creates your new denture that houses the implant components. This denture is tried in, checked then finished.  The denture is then fitted securely onto the titanium implants, and you will be shown how to take the denture in and out.

Aftercare

1

Caring for Your Dental Implants

Good daily cleaning and regular professional maintenance are important for the long-term health of your implants.

At the end of your treatment, we will show you how to clean effectively around your new implants and denture, and recommend the most suitable products for you.

We will then advise how often you should attend dental hygiene appointments, based on your individual needs. These appointments help us monitor the health of the surrounding gums, remove deposits that are difficult to clean at home and identify any early signs of inflammation.

2

Annual Implant Review

We recommend an annual implant review.

During this appointment, we will assess the health and stability of your implants, the surrounding gum and bone, and the implant  denture. We will also review how effectively the area is being cleaned and take a radiograph when clinically required.

Regular reviews allow us to identify any early changes before they develop into more significant problems.

Annual implant reviews and any recommended hygiene care are also required to maintain our extended five-year implant guarantee.

Your annual implant review is separate from your routine dental examination, which remains important for checking the health of your natural teeth, gums and mouth.
