Do You Struggle with Snoring and Excessive Daytime Sleepiness?
Or do you struggle to manage your Obstructive Sleep Apnoea?
With simple snoring, there is no full obstruction of the airway - the noise is simply the vibrations of soft tissue. The snorer may wake feeling unrefreshed, suffer headaches and a tenderness in the upper airway. However more often, it is those nearest and dearest that are profoundly affected and who can suffer from loss of sleep and well-being.
There is evidence that so called ‘simple/benign snoring’ is also linked with hypertension, diabetes and atherosclerosis. Many now believe that ‘simple snoring’ may lead onto obstructive sleep apnoea.
Excessive daytime sleepiness can result from insufficient oxygen entering the body, and poor-quality sleep caused by multiple disturbances, resulting in an inability to concentrate, poor memory, reduction in performance and, in extreme cases, can lead to the sufferer falling asleep unexpectedly. Severe sleepiness has even been found to increase the chances of having an accident whilst driving by seven times.
Our key treatment for snoring and mild to moderate sleep apnoea is the Sleepwell Appliance. This is the most clinically proven mandibular advancement splint for the treatment of snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea, with a success rate of over 80% (in fully apnoeic patients). It is also the most technically advanced. Tested in a randomised controlled cross-over trial against CPAP and a placebo, see:
Barnes et al (2004). Efficacy of Positive Airway Pressure and Oral Appliance in Mild to Moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.
Johal et al. (2016). The Efficacy of Mandibular Advancement Appliances as a Treatment Alternative to CPAP in Moderate OSAHS.
It is designed with internal splint fixing, allowing lips to close around the device to prevent dryness and/or excess salivation associated with other splints. High levels of patient comfort meant that during clinical trials over 98% of patients found the device acceptable.
