Helping Nature Heal Your Tooth
Sometimes the nerve can become damaged in a tooth, causing pain and discomfort. Root canal treatment is the great way of saving the tooth from extraction. Sounds painful? No not at all when provided with great anaesthetic or even sedation!
Root canal treatment involves removing damaged or dead nerves and blood vessels in the tooth root that have become infected due to decay, cracks or trauma. The space left is then filled with a material that seals the tooth and keeps it functioning as before. The treatment takes place under local anaesthetic and the aim is to restore the tooth and its surrounding tissues to health, relieving both pain and infection. In many cases, without root canal treatment, the infected tooth needs to be removed and may be replaced with a dental implant, a fixed bridge or a removable denture.
Treatment is usually a 3-step process and can be carried out over one or more visits, depending on the complexity of the case:
Step 1 - The tooth is anaesthetised and the infected tissue is removed from the space inside the tooth.
Step 2 - The empty space is filled with a warm root filling material, sealing the root canals to prevent further infection.
Step 3 - The crown of the tooth is then filled with a filling. If the tooth is a back tooth, we might suggest that a crown is provided to strengthen the tooth.
